Comcast History

Comcast Corporation is a US Company which provides cable and telephone services in the United States. It is the largest home internet service provider, cable operator and the 4th biggest home telephone service provider. Its headquarters is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its original name was American Cable Systems way back in 1963 when it was founded.

Its founders, Ralph J Roberts, Julian A. Brodsky and Daniel Aaron formed the company based on the suggestions of Pete Musser who gave Ralph Roberts the first cable systems deal in Mississippi.

In 1969, the company was incorporated with the new name of Comcast Corporation which is a combo of the words “Communication” and “Broadcast”.

ComcastComcast took over majority ownership of the Comcase SportsNet, Comcast Spectacor as well as The Golf Channel, Versus, Style Network G4, E! Entertainment Television. It acquired Versus quite recently in 2006. Since then, Comcast started a new channel in collaboration with New York Mets and Time Warner Cable called the SportsNet New York.

Comcast also has some other services available to its consumers like the Comcast Network which airs news, sports and entertainment. The Comcast Corporation started a channel which focuses on life in the Colorado region and made it available only to that region called the Comcast Entertainment Television which is the primary Emergency Alert System in the Denver Metro Area.

Comcast also specializes in the Internet Service Provider business and has launched their services regarding broadband service way back in the 1996. The broadband service field was entered when Comcast bought the Sarasota Online owned by Richard Swier which was the largest internet provider in Florida.

In 1999 Comcast and MediaOne announced a sixty billion dollar merging which was held back for three years, after which it joined as AT&T Broadband. It was around that time that the Comcast logo was altered into the current one. Comcast paid twenty five million dollars to the University of Maryland in 2002 to earn the naming rights for the basketball arena and have that named to Comcast Center.

As of 2010, Comcast has a total count of around twenty three million cable subscribers, eight million voice customers and around sixteen million internet customers. It has its headquarters in Philadelphia and has several corporate branches in Detroit, Manchester, New Hampshire, Atlanta and Denver.

Comcast continues to provide excellent support to its users and expanding. Its success stories pile sky high and its services expanding at a rapid pace. In fact, in January of this year, which is in January of 2011, Comcast bought out NBC with majority shares, a deal which started in December of 2009 when GE and Comcast agreed upon the terms and carried out recently.

Another excellent aspect of Comcast is its working environment for its employees, by that statement note that it does not apply for other corporations that work in collaboration with it. It is always listed in the top places to work list. In 2009, Comcast Corporation along with its sister concern, Comcast-Spectacor won both the silver and gold medals respectively for being the top places to work in the city of Philadelphia.
